The nickname “warped mind” came from my master milliner teacher, Jan Wutkowski.
While observing one of my creations in progress, she stated ‘you have a really warped mind’. It illustrates my ability to perceive hats in the world that surrounds us and transforming all inspirations into my creations. I’m happy when I create, and I hope this joyfulness comes through in my designs.
I grew up in Europe, wearing hats through winters and on special occasions. I rediscovered the thrill of hat-wearing when I found myself in a pinch going to Kentucky Derby – nothing would fit my big head! I signed up for a class and found my groove –a combination of art and practicality. Finally, all my skills can be used in one place – painting, sculpting, sewing!
Over the years, I honed my craft through many classes. Those classes made me realize how small is the community of hat makers, and how mass production devalues the artistry of millinery. This is why, together with 2 extremely talented milliners Andrea and Karen, I will be continuing to run Millinery MeetUp – a unique millinery educational event. We aim to preserve craftsmanship and companionship and hopefully bring more awareness of this amazing profession.
