Terms & Conditions

  1. One entry per participant.

  2. The competition is open to all participants over the age of 18, from students to professional milliners. This competition is open to both national and international submissions.

  3. Each entry must be the participant’s original and individual design. Original workmanship is an important factor in judging.

  4. Participants may not enter on behalf of a third party or business. 

  5. All judging is anonymous and as such all entries may not be labeled with either the entrant’s name or business.

  6. Entry images must be submitted as a .jpg file type and be in a square format, NO LARGER than 20MB. Optimum size would be 1920 pixels wide. PLEASE NOTE that if you do not submit a square image, the display software will crop it, and it may not be the best layout for your image. Your images MUST be square.

  7. One optional entry video may be sent as an MP4, and no longer than 60 seconds. File Size no larger than 300MB.

  8. Contestants will be expected to submit an image of the film headpiece they chose for inspiration to show the judges. This image will not be displayed online therefore image rights are not required. This is for judging purposes only. Failure to provide this image could result in disqualification.

  9. The completed piece must be photographed on a white or cream backdrop. A live model or head form may be used for your display image, but all other views should be taken on a head form, poupee, or block.  If using a live model please photograph in a ¼ headshot crop, no ¾ or full body shots please.

  10. Participants agree that images submitted to the Milliners Guild, for the purpose of the competition, may be used in future for promotion of the competition. Likewise, if the participant is not the copyright owner of the image submitted the participant MUST obtain permission from the owner for the Milliners Guild to use the image in future promotions. The Milliners Guild will not be held responsible for copyright infringement due to a participant’s failure to obtain the necessary permissions.

  11. Any personal information collected during submission of the participant’s entry may be passed on to third parties for the purpose of awarding prizes and media promotion.

  12. Incomplete, or late entries will be deemed invalid.

  13. Pieces may not be altered in any way from the time of original submission, till the end of the competition. Pieces found to have been altered will be disqualified.

  14. Final designs may not be more than 20x20x20 inches in size, including trims.

  15. All entries must be created specifically for this competition. Pieces previously submitted to other competitions will not be accepted.

  16. Images or descriptions of entries may not be shared online prior to the completion of judging.

  17. Once entries have closed, the judges will select ten finalists. 

  18. A popular vote category will run virtually via the Milliners Guild website. 

  19. If selected as a top ten finalist the participant agrees to ship their piece to the finalist’s display venue within one week of notification to ship from the Milliners Guild. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

  20. If selected as a top ten finalist the participant is responsible for all shipping, taxes, customs fees, and VAT to and from the display venue.

  21. The Milliners Guild is not responsible for any damage to a piece incurred during shipping to and from the event venues. 

  22. All participants are expected to behave in a professional manner toward competition organizers, fellow participants, and judges. Any participant found to be behaving inappropriately by the competition committee will be disqualified.

  23. All judge’s decisions are final and will not be debated or altered.

  24. All prizes are valued in US dollars and may not be exchanged for cash value or alternate goods and services. Prizes may not be transferred to another individual.

  25. The Milliners Guild will not be responsible for any taxes or fees imposed on prizes awarded. Participants are fully responsible for any taxes or fees on prizes awarded.

  26. Once the winner has been announced, and the prize donors have been informed of the winner’s details and contact information, the Milliners Guild is no longer responsible for coordinating the distribution of prizes. 

  27. Any prizes donated by third parties are subject to that third party’s terms and conditions. The Milliners Guild may not be held liable by the winners if a third-party supplier fails to supply any or all of the promised prize. Likewise, the Milliners Guild is not liable for any defect found in the prizes supplied by a third party.

  28. Milliners Guild Officers, Board, and Competition Committee members are not eligible for entry.

  29. The Milliners Guild reserves the right to amend scheduled competition dates, deadlines, and locations, including display venue, due to unforeseen complications. Participants will be given as much notice as is possible of any changes.

Submission Requirements

  1. Completed submission form.

  2. Fully paid, non-refundable, entry fee of $80 USD.

  3. No layouts, collages, or watermarked images will be accepted.

  4. A design statement, in English, of no more than 150 words, must be included with each submission. Design statements will be included in the materials submitted to the judges, as well as any social media and marketing promotions.

  5. Entrants may submit an optional video showing a 360-degree view of the piece. Videos must be submitted as an MP4 file and may not be longer than 60 seconds, with a file size no greater than 300MB.

  6. All entries must be received by 11:59pm EST on June 3rd , 3:59am UTC/ 1:59pm AEST on June 1st . Entries submitted later than the deadline will not be eligible.

  7. Please submit the following images of your hat. Display images may be live modeled, all others must be on a head form, poupee, or block. Please ensure live models are photographed in a ¼ headshot crop. Images as specified below:

    • Front

    • Back

    • Right Side

    • Left Side

    • Underside

    • Top 

    • Display Image: This is the first image that will be displayed of your hat on our website and any promotional materials. Please choose the angle that you feel best showcases your design.

    • Inspiration film hat image: This will be sent to our judges only, as we will not be able to post it on our gallery of entries due to photo copyrights.

    • Link to an image of your inspiration hat: This link to the inspiration piece could be included in the public gallery on our website so that the public will be able to see your original inspiration piece.

    • Label each image with your first and last initial and indicate the view shown (ex. AB_Front, AB_Back, etc.)

    • Please ensure images are in focus and well lit.

Judging

  1. Once registration has closed the judges will review the entries and select the top ten finalists.

  2. The top ten finalists will promptly ship their entries to the first display venue.

  3. The judges will reconvene and select the First, Second, and Third places.

  4. A people’s choice competition will be run concurrently on the Milliners Guild website, with the winner being announced prior to the Judges’ choices.

  5. Judges will be taking the following into account:

    • Composition of Design

    • Proportion; Balance 

    • Difficulty, Execution, & Finishing

    • Wearability

    • Interpretation of Theme

This competition is open to all members of the public over 18 years of age. Participants must be willing to ship their hat, promptly, to the United States for display if selected as one of the top ten finalists. A full list of Terms & Conditions will be posted prior to the opening of registration.
