Austin began her career working as an actress in the theater which meant she was lucky enough to wear hats to work. She eventually left the stage but her love for hats continued as a collector and finally a student of millinery teachers in Los Angeles and eventually across the world. Austin enjoys working with a variety of fabrics and often tries to infuse humor into her designs. She won the 2019 Prix du President award the Les Estivales du Chapeau competition in Caussade, France and the Best Workmanship award at Millinery Meet-up in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
